Dicha fuente está colocada en el cruce de tres calles y marca el punto final de uno de los mas antiguos acueductos de la ciudad, el Aqua Virgo. La fuente de agua pura fue encontrada a unos escasos 22 kilómetros de la ciudad, en el siglo 19 AC, y eso es lo que representa la escena de la fachada que todos ven hoy antes de arrojar la famosa moneda que asegura el regreso.
La costumbre de las fuentes fue retomada en el siglo XV cuando el Aqua Virgo se reparó (había sido destruido por los godos), y se construyó aquí mismo una fuente de lo mas sencilla. Hacía el siglo XVII el papa Urbano VIII exigió renovaciones, pero fue durante el papado de Clemente XII que se abrió el concurso para la obra. Finalmente, la fuente fue diseñada por Salvi, quien murió antes de que la obra se terminara, en 1762.
